Sowing — this is the operation where a mistake can’t be corrected. A gap in the row, the wrong seeding depth, rushing in poor conditions — and the hybrid won’t reach its potential, however much you put into fertilizers and protection afterwards. Uneven plant density, uneven emergence, “doubles” in the row — all of these are the consequences of poor-quality sowing, and they stay with the field all season.
At Wester we take sowing seriously: we check soil temperature, adjust the drill for the specific hybrid, and don’t rush if conditions aren’t right. Khmelnytskyi region, from 400 ha.
What the service includes
- Sowing with a precision drill — every seed in its place
- Adjusting the seeding rate for the specific hybrid — according to the manufacturer’s recommendations
- Seeding depth control (5–8 cm depending on soil moisture and the hybrid)
- Accurate row spacing 70 cm — the standard for maize
- GPS parallel guidance — straight rows for subsequent inter-row cultivation
- Sowing quality control as work progresses — the operator monitors the readings
Why sowing quality matters
Uneven plant density is one of the main reasons for maize yield shortfalls. Gaps and “doubles” in the row reduce the hybrid’s potential yield by 10–20% even with perfect care afterwards. A precision drill eliminates this problem mechanically — every seed drops at the right moment and at the right depth.
The second critical factor is seeding depth. Too shallow (less than 4 cm) — the seed germinates unevenly because there isn’t enough moisture. Too deep (more than 10 cm) — seedlings appear late and weakened. 5–8 cm with normal soil moisture is the optimum.
Optimal sowing dates
- Soil temperature at a depth of 10 cm — steadily +10…+12°C (not a one-off measurement but several days in a row)
- A frost-free forecast for 7–10 days after sowing
- The soil should be workable — not waterlogged
- Usually for the Khmelnytskyi region: end of April — first ten days of May
We don’t rush in poor conditions — even if the neighbours are already sowing. Cold soil greatly increases the risk of seed rot and uneven emergence. Better to sow 3–4 days later, but in optimal conditions.
After sowing — comprehensive protection
We also carry out all subsequent field operations — from the first leaf to harvest. This lets you build complete field management without changing contractors.
The current list of maize protection products is in our crop protection catalog.
- Herbicides — pre-emergence treatment right after sowing
- Post-emergence herbicides — at the 2–4 leaf stage of the crop
- Nitrogen feeding during active growth
- Spraying against pests and diseases throughout the season
Price
The cost of sowing is from 600 UAH/ha. The price depends on the area and the distance to the field. When ordered together with spraying or soil tillage — an extra discount on the package.
